Insights from Dr. Falcone on Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery

In an effort to inform my patients about what I feel are interesting issues in the world of aesthetic and reconstructive surgery I will occasionally post thoughts and insights in this space.

NON-INVASIVE BODY CONTOURING

This is a direct quote from the Aesthetic Surgery Journal of April 2015 regarding the many currently available and heavily marketed devices being promoted to alter body contours without surgery....

"There is generally not much in the way of high-level evidence to support the use of any of the noninvasive body contouring devices. The research papers that have been published are often supported by the companies that manufacture the machines or are authored by investigators who have financial interests in the companies. There are no comparative trials to demonstrate the effectivemness of one technology over another....The majority of the studies also had very short-term follow-up periods with no long-term evaluation of the duration of the treatment results. The majority of studies failed to account for patient variables, such as generalized weight loss from lifestyle changes, that can contribute to reductions in measurements and affect outcomes."

Let the buyer beware....

OUTPATIENT SURGERY CENTER SAFETY   Tragedies in the news concerning outpatient surgery centers reinforces my belief that outpatient surgery of any kind, especially cosmetic surgery, should be handled with the same attention to safety as would be available in a hospital setting. For that reason I only perform surgery in hospital-based accredited outpatient facilities. These facilities are held to a very high standard and employ trained specialists in anesthesia and peri-operative nursing for the safest possible surgical experience. This type of facility also allows for overnight stay and monitoring by trained nurses, an added bonus for longer, complex surgeries and for those out-of-town patients. These facilities may cost more than other outpatient surgery facilities but in my opinion the added level of safety and monitoring is well worth the cost.

AEROBIC ACTIVITY AS AN ELIXIR OF YOUTH     A recent study (see article below) finds that exercise may help your skin to become healthier by promoting thicker dermis and healthier superficial skin layers. The effects are noticeable even in older populations of people who were not originally active. The effect appears to be mediated by myokines, substances released by active muscles, that stimulate healthy skin changes. To avoid the damage from sun light when exercising outdoors, continue to wear a broad spectrum sun block.

SUNSCREEN UPDATES    Sunscreens and their proper usage (see article below) are an important step to preventing skin cancers and reducing early signs of aging. Remember to use a "broad spectrum protection" sunscreen with at least SPF of 15 or 30. Broad spectrum provides better protection from UVB and UVA which is responsible for aging and skin damage (ie wrinkles). Reapply often and avoid spray products, they are not as effective.

EXCITING NEW DERMAPEN TREATMENT NOW AVAILABLE!

Dermapen®  is a unique and innovative new technique to enhance the appearance of your skin without the need for invasive surgery. This fractional micro-needling treatment or collagen induction therapy (CIT) has a stimulating effect on targeted areas of skin and works to tighten, lift and rejuvenate the skin. The effects are profound and the down time is reasonable given the results, ask Julie or any of our office staff about this new treatment option.
